SPAD Receives Award in Geneva ... A Recognition of PM's Commitment

The Malaysian government was today acknowledged for its commitment to public transport when Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (S.P.A.D.) was awarded the Asia Pacific Political Commitment Award by the International Association for Public Transport (UITP), here at the UITP World Congress 2013 in Geneva.

SPAD CEO, Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal as Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific Executive Committee (APExC) for the International Association of Public Transport (UiTP).

This prestigious award was in recognition of S.P.A.D.’s hard work to deliver and implement new landmark public transport projects for Malaysia under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), such as the MRT, GO-KL bus services within the KL Central Business District (CBD), the 2-Tier KLIA Taxi System, Teksi Rakyat 1Malaysia (TR1Ma) as well as the Interim Stage Bus Support Fund (ISBSF).

Accepting the award on behalf of Malaysia, S.P.A.D. Chief Executive Officer, Encik Mohd Nur Kamal said that this award was in recognition of Prime Minster Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak’s commitment to public transport.

Encik Mohd Nur continued by saying “This award is also a testament to the Prime Minister’s personal passion to revamping and further enhancing Malaysia’s public transport system”.

The UITP World Congress is held every 2 years and is organised by UITP, the International Association of Public Transport, which is headquartered in Brussels. It is an international meeting attended by all public transport stakeholders including governments, regulatory bodies, planners, operators, scientific institutes, vendors and technology providers. UITP has 3,400 members from 92 countries and is the global advocate of public transport and sustainable mobility, and the promoter of innovations in the sector.

 

This World Congress saw S.P.A.D. Chairman, Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar moderating a session which discussed the challenges in accessing funding for public transport infrastructures and projects whilst Encik Mohd Nur led discussions with other public transport Organizing Authorities (OA) from Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australasia. S.P.A.D.’s Head for Policy, Planning and Research, Dr. Prodyut Dutt, also delivered a paper showcasing Malaysia’s advancements in the public transport industry.

Executive Committee of UiTP

Malaysia’s effort to transform the land public transport is recognised with the inclusion of Land Public Transport Commission chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal as Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific Executive Committee (APExC) for the International Association of Public Transport (UiTP).

For the Asia-Pacific, it is a division of UiTP and is regulated by the APExC. It is run by the Chairman and Vice-Chairs.

In a statement by SPAD, the commission said: “As a Vice Chair, Nur Ismal is responsible for promoting public transport in the region and globally. He will assist UITP to improve its membership base in the country and act as the facilitator to share and exchange information among the members.”
